Far above all rule and
authority and power and dominion and every name that is named [above every
title that can be conferred], not only in this age and in this world, but also in the age and the world which are to come (Ephesians
1:21 AMP).
Paul is making it picture perfect clear that the position of
Jesus Christ is the highest position that exists both in this age and world and
the age and world to come. It is hard
for most of us to get our heads around this concept because, let’s face it, even
if we were to hold the position of the President of the United States, that
position is only as pertinent as the power of the country which confers
it. In other words, right now the United
States is, by far, the most powerful country in the world. Yet, as believers, we read the book of
Revelation and it is apparent that either America no longer exists, or if she does,
her destiny is diminished when it comes to being a superpower and so whoever
would be at the helm of control, would no longer have the same type of respect,
authority, power, and position they once had when she was at the top of her
game.
Yet, this verse sets out a different kind of position and
title for Jesus. God raised Him from the
dead, seated Him at His own right hand in Heaven, and has declared that this
position is eternal and not subject to any changes. While this is exciting to think of for the
age to come and the amazing life that is waiting for us who are “in Christ,” it
is also quite comforting in the here and now.
Regardless of what crazy things happen in the world today, the immutable
fact of Christ’s supremacy is never at stake.
Whether pastors fall, World War 3 breaks out, or we just have a bad day
at work, God is on the throne, Jesus is at His right hand, and – according to
Colossians 3:1-4 – we are securely positioned right there with them:
If then you have been
raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ
is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your
minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth. For you
have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. When
Christ who is your life appears, then you also will appear with
him in glory (Colossians 3:1-4 ESV).
Kingdoms will come and go, but the Word of God will always
stand with Christ is for all eternity seated at the right hand of God. And those of us who are “in Christ,” are
right there with Him!
Today I will meditate on my position in Christ so that my
heart will turn toward seeking the things that are above.
